Explore Coventry’s culture and history

Above all else, Coventry is a city that wears its history proudly.

lady godiva

While legendary tales of Lady Godiva still echo through the streets, you’ll find the striking statue of the Lady herself upon a horse in the city centre overlooked by the famous Godiva Clock. Did you know that her legend even gave rise to the phrase, Peeping Tom? Find out why and read more about her fascinating story here.

Another must-see is the striking contrast of the ruined medieval Old Cathedral against the bold, modern Coventry Cathedral that stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and renewal after the Second World War. Destroyed in the most concentrated air raid on a British city during the conflict, known as the Coventry Blitz, the original cathedral was reduced to rubble along with many homes and public buildings. Today, you can still visit the awe-inspiring Cathedral Ruins, left not just as a reminder of the devastation, but also the strength, bravery and resilience of Coventry’s community.

A lesser-known but multi-award-winning historic gem in the heart of Coventry, St Mary’s Guildhall offers a captivating window into the city’s medieval past. Once the seat of power for Coventry’s merchants and guilds, it has hosted royals, grand feasts, and even played a part in the War of the Roses. Following its stunning restoration, the Guildhall has recently been honoured with a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for the third consecutive year, a Bronze VisitEngland Award for Excellence 2025 for International Tourism, and Gold Awards for both International Tourism and Accessible & Inclusive Tourism at the West Midlands Tourism Awards 2025. Visitors can step inside its magnificent Great Hall – home to one of the finest surviving medieval tapestries in the country – and experience the grandeur and influence Coventry once held. With interactive displays and an atmospheric on-site restaurant, Tales of Tea, nestled in the building’s historic Undercroft, St Mary’s Guildhall is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Coventry’s rich heritage and see why it continues to earn national and international acclaim.

Just outside the city centre, you’ll find the newly reopened Charterhouse, a beautiful National Trust property and originally one of the most important Carthusian monasteries in the country. Learn about the history of this heritage site and explore its tranquil gardens – and don’t forget to pop into the café for a slice of something fresh to compliment your visit.

If live sport is more up your street, then you’ll be delighted to hear that Coventry is home to not one, but three major sports teams. Join the home crowd at the CBS Arena to cheer on the Sky Blues, head to the Skydome in the city centre to experience a thrilling ice hockey match with Coventry Blaze, or aim for an autograph from your favourite player on the Coventry Rugby team at Butts Park Arena.
