Artist Tim Mills presents photographic outcomes co-created with communities on The Burges, during his one year Picturing High Streets Residency. The installation at the Coventry Transport Museum is part of the legacy of a multifaceted project.
A third of the shops on the Burges are occupied by fast-food restaurants and takeaways, with bicycle delivery riders forming a significant community of people that provide food courier services throughout the city. Coventry has a distinguished and unique bicycle manufacturing heritage. From the first velocipedes built in 1868, the city went on to become the home of the British cycle industry and at one time produced the greatest output of cycles in the world.
Tim Mills has explored the history of this industry whilst involving the delivery riders on The Burges to produce a contemporary portrait that highlights their lives and work. The project includes stories of migration and of refugees in relation to Coventry’s role as a city of peace, reconciliation and sanctuary, interpreted in the photographs.
The installation that can be seen at Coventry Transport Museum relates to the themes embedded during Tim’s Picturing High Streets Residency: exploring industries that defined the city of the past and those that shape it today; examining ideas of arrivals, departures and transience; and working with an important community of people that provide goods and services in the area.
Picturing High Streets is a three year project by Historic England and Photoworks to create a contemporary portrait of England’s high streets, part of Historic England’s government-funded High Streets Heritage Action Zone scheme.
GRAIN Projects is the lead regional partner on Picturing High Streets delivering projects in Coventry, Stoke on Trent and Walsall.

Our Tinker | Make | Play workshop space is back this summer for you to choose from a variety of activities to playfully explore technology, learn new skills using pliers, screwdrivers and other tools to take apart everyday items and come up with a creation fit for our Future. To entertain the youngest participants (and the youngest at heart), play away in a dedicated play area to playfully explore the theme. No matter what age or ability, our Tinker | Make | Play workshop space will hold something for everyone.
Did you ever wonder what engineering is all about? At Coventry Transport Museum, we believe it all starts with curiosity, perseverance, and creativity. We believe, we have come up with the perfect formula for a workshop that will help develop those engineering skills. Here it goes:
Tinker (To tinker at Coventry Transport Museum means hands-on exploring what real stuff is made of and how it works. Find out what parts are hidden behind the covers and see what they do. We will provide the tools, the safety gear and the reference books.)
+
Make (To make at Coventry Transport Museum means letting your imagination run wild. Whether your project needs hardware, cardboard, electronics, timber, needlework or paint, our workshop will be stocked with a random selection of stuff for you to work with.)
+
Play (To play at Coventry Transport Museum means to embrace the nonsensical, the playful, the chaos, the unknown, the uncertainty, the process to make accidental learning happen. Play in an open-ended play environment that offers a choice of wonderfully weird, yet also engineering-related, playthings.)
=
Tinker | Make | Play Engineers
You will need to bring:
· At least one very supportive grown-up to be with you throughout this workshop. We know from experience that all mums, dads, uncles, aunties, older siblings, grandparents, carers are perfectly qualified for this role as no previous engineering experience is needed (they are indeed very useful and really, really good at handing you tools)
We offer:
· A safe and relaxed space.
· Engineering Skills! You will use real tools to take apart or make things. So, you will build up your engineering skills no matter what.
· Permission to destroy! So you can fully explore some things, we let you break them AND you will not be told off*.
· Fun! We are prepared to throw one or two surprise maker challenges at you just to keep you on your toes.
· Expertise! Our amazing experts from the Learning Team will encourage you throughout. They are experts in playful engineering. That means they are curious, they persevere, are imaginative, love solving problems and teamwork. They will happily offer their expertise and support you when needed.
*Please note we take no responsibility for the inspiration we evoke in your children to destroy and create their own inventions with your household gadgets.

Charlie loves reading. Especially books about pirates.
But his sister hates it – it’s boring! Can Charlie convince her that reading is fun? Perhaps if she read a book about a pirate, who is reading a book about Goldilocks, who is reading a book about a knight…
Come and delve into a range of books with Charlie Cook , brought to life with puppetry and enchanting songs, and perhaps you will be able to help his sister discover the wonderful world inside a book…
Based on the original book Charlie Cook Favourite Book – written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.
Produced by The Lowry and Little Angel Theatre.

The Core is delighted to host an evening of fantastic Jazz music on Saturday 26 July as part of the Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival. We’ll be joined by two brilliant bands, Jump, Jive and Wail and Calypso Moon.
Jump, Jive and Wail
Based in Halifax and very busy throughout the North, Jump, Jive and Wail take their name from the Louis Prima hit – which is a fair indication of their musical style. For red hot jump and jive this is the band!
Calypso Moon
The UK’s favourite all-women jazz band, Calypso Moon, are enchanting audiences everywhere with their uplifting music and astounding talent! Singer Eleanor Dattani is supported by saxophonist Alex Clarke, bassist Amy Coates and drummer Lydia Granville. Swinging their way through The Great American Songbook with class and style and recalling the joy and romance of a previous age, these accomplished musicians honour the queens of jazz such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday with their own magic touch!

Well I reckon our real problem isn’t Artificial Intelligence it’s good old fashioned Authentic Stupidity! Forget AI! It’s AS we need to be worrying about!’
Ben Elton first exploded into the national consciousness back in the 1980’s hosting Channel 4’s ground breaking Saturday Live and he’s been setting the standard for gag filled, taboo busting, tonsil rattling, mind expanding stand-up comedy ever since!

In Spon Street, one of the most historic streets in Coventry, a terrace of six cottages built in 1455 has been brought back to life.
One of the cottages has been restored to show how it would have looked in 1540. This shows how John Croke, a Coventry narrow-loom weaver and his family would have lived and worked. You can also see a replica of the loom that he would have used.
At the back of the Weaver’s House is a medieval garden showing the plants that would have been grown for food, flavouring, medicine and household use.

This is Going to Hurt was a literary sensation, selling three million copies and becoming a multi-BAFTA-winning BBC series.
Undoctored follows on from This is Going to Hurt, leaving audiences laughing and crying with Adam’s unique tales of life on and off the wards.
It also contains the ‘degloving’ story because people ask for refunds if they don’t hear it.
Since it’s transformation from the much loved mainstay of the Coventry music scene, Taylor Johns, to a charitable organisation in August 2013, The Tin Music and Arts has gone from strength to strength. Named in homage to the now sadly closed Tin Angel, The Tin Music and Arts is committed to creating a thriving, artistic hub here at the Canal Basin as well as in other venues around the city. Our events have a positive influence on the community of Coventry as a whole – whether that be through our regular live music events, which sees us frequently booking established and international acts as well as local homegrown talent, or through our artist’s studio, and Community Space, which is used almost every day of the week for Tai Chi and Yoga Classes.
We are based in two neighbouring premises – The Tin at the Coal Vaults is a venue which is set in the former coal storage building in Coventry’s 18th century canal basin. It has two main rooms, one of which contains a stage and performance area; the other has a bar and seating. Next door in Units 1-4 is our office, rehearsal space, artist studio and large community room which is used to host a variety of community activities.
Our live music programme takes place in both our own venue – The Coal Vaults as well as other interesting venues around the city.
Our events programme is innovative, diverse, challenging, and we have a reputation for supporting high quality and innovative arts and artists from Coventry, the UK, and from all over the world. As well as programming live music and events we partner with several local organisations to deliver specific programmes and events.
