Coventry City Football Club
Founded over 140 years ago in 1883 as Singers FC – named after the Singer bicycle factory where many early players worked – Coventry City Football Club has grown into one of the city’s proudest institutions.
Home games are played at the Coventry Building Society (CBS) Arena – a 32,000-capacity stadium now proudly owned by the club.
The club joined the football league in 1919, but it was during the 1960s, under the leadership of the visionary Jimmy Hill, that the Sky Blues truly began to take shape. Hill changed the team colours from dark blue and white to the now-iconic sky blue, introduced the club anthem The Sky Blue Song, and transformed the way the game was experienced both on and off the pitch.
One of Coventry City’s greatest triumphs came in 1987, when they lifted the FA Cup after beating Tottenham Hotspur 3–2 in one of the most memorable finals in English football history. More recently, with Frank Lampard appointed as head coach in December 2024, the team has shown significant improvement in the Championship, creating an exciting buzz around the club as they push for a stronger position in the league.
On matchdays, the atmosphere is unforgettable – thanks largely to the fans. Known for being loud, passionate, and united, the Sky Blue Army fill the stadium with chants and songs. Singer’s Corner (blocks 14–16) leads the charge, creating an energy that rivals even Premier League matchdays. Traditions like singing We Live and Die in These Towns by Coventry band The Enemy before kick-off, and the fun halftime game Kick it for a Ticket, make the experience uniquely Coventry.
Whether you’re a lifelong supporter or attending your first match, the club prides itself on offering a welcoming, family-friendly environment. Fans often say that it’s the supporters themselves who make Coventry City so special – generations of families coming together to share in the highs, the lows, and the unforgettable moments that come with following the Sky Blues.
Built in 2005, the Coventry Building Society (CBS) Arena combines modern facilities with footballing tradition.
Fans can enjoy a wide range of food and drink on the concourse, relax in the Anecdote bar, or explore the dedicated Family Zones and Fan Zones before the match. For something extra special, the Balcony Street Bar package blends the atmosphere of the concourse with the comfort of hospitality – including food, easy access to a bar, and excellent seats. And on big matchdays, especially against local rivals, there’s usually something special happening to make the occasion even more memorable.
For visitors wanting to dive deeper into the club’s story, behind-the-scenes stadium tours are available in the spring and summer months outside the football season, taking you through parts of the ground not usually open to the public. While player meet-and-greets aren’t guaranteed, it’s not unusual to find players sticking around after games to sign autographs and chat with fans.
From the roar of Singer’s Corner and the Wall of Fame to the dedication to Jimmy Hill and the more recent statues of the iconic 1987 FA Cup-winning management duo George Curtis and John Sillett, Coventry City offers not just football but an experience steeped in history, pride, and community spirit.
