During the 18th century, Coventry was at the forefront of the industrial revolution; trades such as ribbon weaving and watchmaking become some of our most famous exports. It was the 18th century that we really made our mark with invention of the modern bicycle, quickly followed up in 1896 when the Daimer company manufactured the very first car.
As we moved into the 19th century, factories manufacturing this new mode of transport popped up across the region. Indeed, Sir Frank Whittle, born and bred in Coventry, was undoubtedly inspired by his father’s automotive career and went on to design the world’s first turbojet engine in 1937.
These achievements lay the foundations for extraordinary and pioneering engineering as we progressed in the 20th century and continue to this day such as an 800Million investment into STEM research at the University of Warwick and the home of many national companies and new ones like the Frasers Group and E.ON.
