St Mary’s Guildhall is offering a string of Halloween events exploring real history and historic ghost stories in the heart of Coventry’s Cathedral quarter this October half term.
Gertie the Guildhall Witch is brimming with spooky tales and spellbinding fun, and is in need of curious guests to help find her missing cat.
Visitors must follow the Halloween-themed paw print trail which will include rhyming clues that will be left throughout the ghoulish medieval building in the hope to find her feline friend Tap. (The Meet Gertie experience is available from Saturday, October 28 until Tuesday, October 31.)
There will also be hands-on activities in the Guildhall’s medieval kitchen, hosted by the Guildhall’s Tudors, including making cloth pumpkins and willow wands that can be taken away and used to get into the Halloween spirit.
Young visitors can also find out about ‘grime and punishment’ from centuries gone by. Children were treated no differently to adults with some unpleasant punishments, and guests can learn about the scold’s bridle, tussy mussy, and why a bath once-a-year was a good idea.
Superstitions and top tips to ward off evil will also be shared, with ‘WhatsIt’ the barn owl, otherwise known as a ‘ghost owl’, dropping by on Saturday October 28 to Friday November 3.
Guests will tread the same ground as historical figures such as Mary Queen of Scots and Frederick Douglass and hear about the centuries of gripping history that unfolded in Coventry though an immersive digital tour.

Under the buzzing lights of a psychiatric hospital in Aberdeenshire in 1897, Mina Murray recounts her encounters with the most terrifying of beasts: Dracula.
A throng of patients listen with bated breath as they are transported to a world where immortality and ultimate power is possible, even for women – but with terrible consequences…
Not for the faint-hearted, Morna Pearson’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic tale is filled with her trademark humour and taste for the strange and grotesque. This breathtaking gothic production transposes the action to Scotland amid the wild beauty of the landscapes of the northeast which originally inspired the novel. With an all-female and gender non binary ensemble cast we witness the addiction, intoxication, and empowerment of Mina.
Miss this contemporary re-telling at your peril…
Based on the classic novel by Bram Stoker
Conceived by Morna Pearson and Sally Cookson, Written by Morna Pearson, Directed by Sally Cookson
If you think you know the story of The Elephant Man – think again.
The European premiere of Australian playwright Tom Wright’s acclaimed play imagines an alternative. This is the story of a man fighting for his right to be and to belong.
Arriving from his East Midlands beginnings in a London thick with the grime of industrialisation, Joseph Merrick is an anomaly. In a city of factories that churn out uniformity, there is no place for a unique being like him. But Merrick and the city are evolving into something new. We follow him through the workhouse, the freakshow and hospital as he searches for acceptance in a society that just wants to stare at him.
Powerful, angry and surprising – The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man questions industrialisation, capitalism, disability and difference, finally putting Joseph at the centre of his own story.
