George Eliot in Words and Music with Harriet Walter and Orchestra of the Swan

Harriet Walter brings George Eliot to bold and dramatic life, through Eliot’s novels, letters, journals, poetry and journalism.

In tune with George Eliot’s radicalism, Orchestra of the Swan’s Artistic Director David Le Page has devised a dazzlingly creative music programme that features 21st century female singer-songwriters including Kate Bush, Florence Welch, PJ Harvey and Joan Armatrading.

Performing with acclaimed singer-songwriter, SuRie. Internationally renowned for classical, pop and musical theatre, SuRie also won the Offie for Lead Performance in a Musical in 2024 for her portrayal of Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun.

Coventry played a huge part in Eliot’s life, and this performance has been commissioned by St Mary’s Guildhall, Coventry. George Eliot is said to have set the courtroom scene in Adam Bede in their 700 year-old Great Hall.

Script commissioned by St Mary’s Guildhall with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to National Lottery players.
